I was recently at a Den Meeting for my son’s Cub Scouts, and they were doing an activity on “healthy food”. This is a situation that has come up several times over the past year, since I started learning the truth about human nutrition.

Here is a picture I took of the page in his Scout Handbook:

Of course it’s immediately unsurprising that this nutritional advice comes from a government source, and is therefore woefully outdated, or willfully misleading. It’s hard to tell which sometimes.

The recommendation is that over HALF of your plate should be fruits and grains, with the smallest portion being “protein”. There is no mention of fat anywhere. (Because, of course, fat is “bad”. So even the recommended protein is LEAN.)

My kids often encounter similar discussions at school. At one point my first grade son informed me that he had called apples “junk food” when they were talking about “good foods” in class. Considering that apples are mostly just sugar (fructose) with a little fiber mixed in, and have a HIGH glycemic index (remember why you should care about Glycemic Index?), they’re basically just tree candy.

His teacher’s response? “Well, that’s just because of your dad’s diet.” I mean, that’s technically true… 🤷‍♂️

My fourth grade daughter informs me that she often has conversations with her friends at lunchtime when they talk about their “healthy” sandwiches and whole grain this and that. And when she responds that “fat is much better for you”, she’s met with incredulity.

“What?!!?? Fat is BAD FOR YOU!!!”

Even as an adult, I took a “health assessment” quiz at work, that asked about my eating habits. It informed me that I needed to eliminate fat from my diet as much as possible, eat more “healthy” fats like vegetable oils, and add more whole grains.

The exact things you should do, if you want to develop any number of inflammatory diseases.

As of the writing of this post in February of 2019, it’s still an uphill battle to get popular acceptance of an anti-inflammatory diet. But progress IS being made, and ultimately, truth will win out as those of us eating high fat, low carb diets become healthier, live longer, and have better quality of life, while the rest of the “nutritionally wise” continue to die of heart disease and diabetes at epidemic rates.
