Some of you may have noticed that in my posts up until this point, I have been making claims without posting supporting facts and references. This has been intentional on my part in order to simplify the information presented as much as possible.
Eating healthy is something your body understands NATURALLY. You’ve been TAUGHT all the bad information, which is why you struggle to stick to the “good advice” out there on healthy nutrition.
Now that I’ve got all the basics out of the way on a very simple and straightforward level, in addition to giving you “My Thoughts” on nutrition advice I disagree with, I also want to bring you the information that has benefited me the most.
I think it will do the same for you.
Today I’d like to share a video posted by Dr. Ken Berry. He was one of the first sources of information on the anti-inflammatory diet and keto that I found, and has continued to provide valuable information week after week.
For those in a skimming mood, I’ll summarize the big takeaways from the video. I recommend you watch the full video to get the maximum insight he provides, and please consider browsing his YouTube channel for the TONS of other wonderful videos he has on all kinds of health topics.
The 7 Biggest Keto Mistakes
In this video, Dr. Berry discusses the 7 biggest mistakes he sees from people that are new to the ketogenic way of eating:
Not Eating Enough Fat
As I recently learned myself eating a Carnivore Diet for a month, it’s easy to fall into the old habit of eating meat that is very lean, and doesn’t have enough fat. We’ve been taught for so long to fear and avoid these “fatty foods”, that it can be hard to unlearn that habit.
Not Getting Enough Salt and Electrolytes
Most people don’t realize how much sodium and electrolytes there are in carbohydrate heavy foods. I know I didn’t.
But once you eliminate those foods, unless you’re eating totally grass-fed and grass-finished meats, you’re probably going to find yourself needing to add salt and electrolytes to your diet.
Especially if you DO have some carbs, because when your body flushes out the water and inflammation it carries to digest those carbs, it takes your electrolytes with it!
You Keep Snacking
When you’re riding the blood sugar roller coaster, you get in the habit of eating pretty much non-stop. As I wrote about in my post on The Benefits of Intermittent Fasting, your body actually EVOLVED to go long periods between meals. Fasting actually makes your body stronger, healthier, and clears out the bad cells you’re carrying around. Including cancer.
Comparing Results to Others
This is a common pitfall in ANYTHING new that you might try. Focus on your own results, and don’t worry about if other people are doing “better”. You’ll be happy with what you see, I promise!
Worrying about Portions and Calories
This is something I did myself, and actually lost a significant amount of weight. But as Dr. Berry points out in the video, it’s not sustainable long term. Eating a healthy, high fat, satisfying diet IS.
Trusting Food Marketing
Don’t trust the marketing ad lines and labels. Read the ingredients and look for the important information like I mentioned in my post about Inflammatory Oils. Or better yet, stick to meat and low-carb veggies!
Going It Alone!
With so many excellent resources out there (many of which I will continue to share with you going forward), there’s no reason to wing this on your own!
